SV: let's get rid of SRS

2004-05-19 09:35:50
What would the replacement be? As far as I see it, there are two ways to handle
forwarding: At the forwarder or at the final recipient.

Personally, I prefer to whitelist my forwarding service - I even firewalled my
personal mail server at home (mx for dybdahl.net), so that it can only be
reached by the forwarders (like the mx for dybdahl.dk).

If you want to replace SPF with something that is easier to understand than
SRS, I could suggest this one:
- The forwarding service puts the envelope information into the e-mail header
in a well defined way
- The final SPF filter gets a list of forwarding services, and if an e-mail is
received from one of these forwarding services, the SPF filter uses the e-mail
header information instead of the envelope to make SPF filtering decisions.

This introduces a delay between envelope arrival at the forwarder and the final
SPF filtering, and also makes it impossible to reject e-mails during the smtp
session between the forwarder and the final recipient, but I would surely use
this.

Lars.

Say, how would folks feel if we got rid of SRS and replaced it with a
less onerous workaround?

Would that be better for forwarders?
