DNS wildcard entries might be completely worthless unless you have web
hosting clients that would like to easily use .htaccess to handle
subdomain breakdown of their site content.
"web hosting clients" are almost universally ignorant of anything DNS
except the most common rudiments, if those. And I bet most web hosting
company techies are only marginally better informed.
While "*" labels work perfectly well, they are so often misunderstood and
misapplied, to the point of working against intentions, if not actually
breaking a zone, that they should be avoided, in general. Same applies to
CNAMEs. And when used, "*" labels and CNAMEs should be tested carefully.
