You parenthetically stated spammer.   Well, spammer or not, the scheme would
have to apply across the board, specially because you don't know what the
sender is yet.

And realistically,  it would be the SPAMMER would be more likely to be NOT
doing any calculation at all.

Which leaves you back to square one:

How do you deal with current compatibility issues?
