 If they tried to

Winston churchill in 1938, in response to Chamberlain's appeasement said:
"we seem to be very near the bleak choice between War and Shame. My feeling
is that we shall choose Shame, and then have War thrown in a little later,
on even more adverse terms than at present."

Microsoft is committed to Sender
ID and already has more money and manpower dedicated to
implementing and evangelizing it than the entire SPF
community combined.

Let them participate in an open and collaborative way and they will receive
support.
If they insist upon their current course there is no course of action
available which can satisfy everyone.

Going head to head is not a viable
strategy. If we refused to allow PRA at all, I am sure
Microsoft would publish Sender ID as a standard anyway and
say goodbye to the IETF.

At least it would then be clear that Microsoft required customers to
licence Microsoft technology to talk to other Microsoft customers, and not
have that whole cartel tacitly endorsed by the IETF. A position which would
undermine their reputation as an impartial body and their role as a
standards authority.
