Technically, it is not even necessary to 'expose' the

RfC 3834 strongly disagrees with this. The MAIL FROM aka
Return-Path is the alpha and omega of SMTP. RfC 3834 asks
all Auto-Responders to ignore mails without Return-Path.
RfC 3834 IMHO also forbids "Sender ID", but that's another
discussion, we all know that PRA is broken beyond repair.
But I agree with you that a technical problem between my
box and anybody else should be reported to me and not to
Dave - if he sent the mail in question from my box... ;-)
It could be as simple as "RoadRuner spams you with bogus
virus alerts, but doesn't accept abuse reports from your
MTA". Or a "SORBS 127.0.0.6: pay 50 dollars or get lost"
Oh yes, it happened both. And it was obviously a problem
between _my_ box and the receiver. I got the bounce, and
I reported it in nanas / nanae / the works. It was not a
problem between Dave's mail.songbird.com and the receiver.
