It is my understanding that if you limit the use of PNG transparency
to the same functionality that GIF has, MSIE supports PNGs just fine.
That means you can only use palette format, not RGB.  You can only use
8-bit color depths, not 16-bit.  You can only have one "color"
(palette entry) marked as transparent, instead of any number.  You can
only have 100% transparent/opaque, rather than an alpha channel.

Basically, you don't gain anything from using PNG instead of GIF,
other than slightly better compression on larger images, but you don't
really lose any functionality either.
