I get the feeling the wizard is doing more harm than good.

Most people end up with "ip:$address a mx ptr a:${domain}
include:${provider}"
whereas "ip:$address" is all they need and want.

That, plus people think the wizard performs magic and updates
their DNS.

I'd rather see it disappear if it cannot be changed.

Am I too negative?

Perhaps suggesting that the wizard is doing more harm than good is
putting it a little too strongly, but I definitely agree that the wizard
causes problems. We refer our customers to the wizard for help in
putting together a "first pass" SPF record, but we warn them up front
that (a) the wizard produces results which are not always optimal, and
(b) they should consult with us after the wizard has produced an SPF
record so that we can do any necessary "pruning" of the record before it
is published in DNS.

Ideally, we shouldn't have to do either (a) or (b). The best option
would be simply to refer our customers to the wizard, and instruct them
to add the wizard results to their DNS zone files.

The wizard page *does* already include information about adding the
resulting SPF record to the DNS zone file using either BIND or djbdns,
although the necessity of doing so is stated somewhat indirectly.
Perhaps the page should make it much more clear that it is necessary to
add the results produced by the wizard to the domain's DNS zone file as
a TXT record.

I would hate for the wizard to disappear altogether, but I agree that
the wizard and the language surrounding the wizard could stand some
improvement.

Nick
