I don't think we gained much by the appeal, and we have lost
a lot of time.

Strongly disagree. Having them on public record is already a
very good thing. I've often used the URLs of the IESG appeals
directory or of my HTML version of Julian's mail in discussions.

Without that it would be very difficult to fight Doug's verdict
"SPF is defunct because of the PRA re-use" (or similar).

I don't think the IETF will want to make "slap" Microsoft
like that.

Coming to terms with their own engineering and ethical standards
will be helpful, The "IETF community" had never any voice in
this mess. It was kept out by first terminating MARID as soon
as it was clear that PRA won't fly, and later by the refusal of
a proper "IETF last call" for SPF.

And the "IETF community" does not work on orders from Redmond
as far as I can judge it. In sharp contrast to other folks,
where both appeals already helped to rule out "stupidity" or
a mere "error" as potential reasons for their actions.

I agree that we had strong *technical* reasons to file the
re-use appeal. I think that the IETF ignoring technical
reasons in favor of political reasons makes the IETF look
really bad. But, there is nothing we can do about that.

Obviously there is one more thing that could be done. I'm also
somewhat unhappy with "the IETF" looking "really bad". The IAB
could fix that.

BTW, that "status change" info mail is a new service of the
RfC editor, I think it's a good idea. As there was no appeal
against v=spf1 the "IESG" flag on your draft was always bogus.

Finally we're at a level where the ominous "IESG" is removed
from the picture as far as v=spf1 is concerned. The most
likely authorities deciding to delay the publication of v=spf1
would now be you, Meng, or the RfC editor - the "IESG" is out.

                           Bye, Frank
