Re: IAB appeal or not - please comment (Re: [spf-discuss] Re: [RFC State] <draft-schlitt-spf-classic-02> has changed state)

I believe that an appeal should go forward. My reasons are as follows:

1) It is the right thing to do on an ethcial basis. We sometimes
forget this when we try to rationalize an issue. If reuse of v=spf1 is
wrong and negatively impacts people who published those records in
good faith (based on the urgings of people in this group) then it is
wrong. To not go forward with the appeal is to be complicit by
omission in the reuse of those records.

2) On a more pragmatic basis, filing the appeal makes it clear that
the folks supporting SPF will not abdicate control (with regard to
abusive use) over their own specifications/standards. As long as
Microsoft et al represents that SID is the successor to SPF then SPF
gets tagged with every problem associated with SID (whether it is true
or not). If the appeal is not pursued, what will we do the next time
MS makes an arbitrary choice that negatively impacts SPF? I would
argue that (as I did at one point in the past) that SPF should use
copyright and trademark laws to minimize the risk of arbitrary use (in
other published approaches). It may be too late for that approach at
this point.

3) SPF has everything to gain and SID has everything to lose by a
continued open and public debate. Conversely, SID has everything to
gain (regardless of the merits of the approach) at this point by
continuing to co-opt spf=v1 records without the SPF folks showing some
backbone. They will outmarket and out PR SPF at every turn. One need
only look at how the 1994 FTC Email Summit played out (particularly in
the media). Every additional spf=v1 record published is a draw for SPF
and SID. Every v2 record is a win for SID/MS. That is a recipe for an
SPF loss in the marketplace. And remember folkls, this has nothing to
do with the inherent merits or problems of either specification.

As usual, just my 2 cents.

Mike
