Well, that may be a reason. However, even spam makes it to the list
(the mail from flowerlife(_at_)westlife(_dot_)com on 2002-01-06), so moderation
doesn't seem to be the ultimate answer to that problem. And further, I
read quite some mailing lists, like Mandrake, MySQL, PHP etc.pp., and
spam really isn't that big of a problem on these lists.
IMHO the best solution would be to only allow mails from subscribees.
Spammers usually do not subscribe to a list, so this step alone would
defend spam. Granted, it's not a fail-proof solution, but it's a very
good way. And further, it reduces some workload from Eric.

clarification request, answer can take over 4 days).
Yes, this really is a nuissance.
Another upside of moderation (besides the anti-spam measures) is, that
the moderator can keep off-topic meta-discussions away from the list.
But that may also be a downside, because people might be "afraid" to
post.
