I was specifically not referring to magazine ads, but to separate items I
get in the mail. In fact, it takes more energy to delete individual items
of junk mail than junk email. :-)
Furthermore, the
incremental cost of emailing you something is at least one and probably
more than three orders of magnitude cheaper than physical mail. Without
some back pressure, you should expect to be completely flooded with junk
email.
Nevertheless, this is a possible conclusion. I don't think it's likely,
anymore than it is likely my postal mailbox will be filled to overflowing
with junk. I figure I'm just not that interesting a target for every
possible unsolicited message.
