Is there any (serious) disadvantage to relying on the format of email
messages as the template for news messages?

I've seen the discussions go on for some time...is it just me or does anyone
else think that stating "the format of a news message and header shall
conform to the current standard for email message bodies and headers" would
save a great deal of time?

It might save a great deal of time now, but it would only store up trouble
for the future.

Nobody here has been prepared to say that they expect RFC 2047 encoding to
be around in 20 years time. Ergo, something has got to change sooner or
later. Usefor does not want to lock itself in to something that is
exceedingly inconvenient, is already being widely misued or ignored, and
is inevitably going to change at some point.

Granted that Email is not yet in a position to escape from this
straightjacket, that is no reason to prevent other protocols from doing
so, even if there is some price to pay at the interface between the two.
