I see nothing in RFC 2822 to indicate how that display-name is intended to
be used. Clearly it is useful to display it for the edification of users
(and that is actually all that is needed in this case to indicate to users
which of the various mailboxes in evidence is/are lists and which are
humans). But there is nothing to preclude MUAs from using that information
for any purpose, and there is no reason why the convention of using it
should not be enshrined in some future standard or BCP.

Try RFCs 1958 and 2277, paying attention to the difference between
protocol elements and text.

Yes, using "LIST" a keyword in group syntax is not the most perfect
solution, but then we are not living in a perfect world.

It has the great advantage that it can be used in To:, Cc:, Reply-To: and
MFT headers without introducing any new syntax, and most present UAs will
copy it from Reply-To (and from MFT for those that do it) into To: and/or
Cc: without further ado.

I don't think we are in a position seriously to consider new syntax for
To:, Cc: and Reply-To. We might just be able to consider new syntax for
MFT. Otherwise, the only new syntax would have to be a brand new header
for mailing lists somewhat equivalent to the Newsgroups: header in News
(which would actually have been an excellent solution if someone had
proposed it 20 years ago, but it is hardly realistic to consider it now).

Several contributors to this list have pointed out that you really do need
to be able to recognise which of all the addresses in the various headers
are actually lists. I have proposed a solution that could work. Have you
anything better to propose?
