I feel fairly certain that there's more to it than that, but offhand I
don't know what it is.
If anything, it seems like a really effective medium for group
conversation would need to be a lot more functional than anything we
can expect to implement via a user interface for interpersonal email.
My impression is that modern IM systems are a lot further along this
curve than either email or usenet is - not just because they are
immediate, but because they offer a very rich set of tools for group
interaction.
Anyway, in my mind, the primary purpose for email is to support
interpersonal communication, not group discussion. Tweaking email to
better support group discussion in a way that harms interpersonal
communication seems like an inappropriate diversion.
