That's one way, and unfortunately it's gaining ground -- it seems to be
increasing common for people to eschew email (or the Internet) entirely
rather than suffer spam, while some are going whitelist-only. Meanwhile,
most Internet users are scared to death of having their true email address
accidently revealed in public where the spammers will harvest it...
Another way to stop smart spammers is to change it so that strangers CAN
still communicate with you easily, while ensuring that they somehow remain
accountable for their actions. For example, if a spammer could be forced
to pay a fine (in real money) if the recipient felt abused, there would be
little incentive to spam people...
Of course, enforcement is another issue, but that's where pervasive changes
to the email infrastructure would probably come into play.
