What is the problem of a host that is never expected to be on the RHS of an email address expected to have an MX record? That's an honest question, given that it has been over 12 years with the current setup.

(mail.imc.org is on the RHS of 10 addresses in my mail archive, including ietf-smtp(_at_)mail(_dot_)imc(_dot_)org and owner-ietf-822(_at_)mail(_dot_)imc(_dot_)org(_dot_))

You could say that the problem is that the host can be on the RHS of an email address anyway, and when it is, it kind of works but quite often it doesn't really work (because DSNs would be lost and other fringe problems). Earlier this week I found that about half of the MX-but-no-A domains in a sample of 30,000 recent nonspam messages weren't deliverable.
