There is no MX RR for, but it has an A and an AAAA RR:

Right.  Since there are no addresses xxx(_at_)mail(_dot_)imc(_dot_)org and no 
mail is
sent with a address, that's how it should be.  Depending
on how Paul has his server set up, mail to addresses like that might
be rejected quickly, might return a DSN, might time out after a week,
might accidentally be mapped to the corresponding xxx(_at_)imc(_dot_)org, or
might go into a black hole somewhere.

This is exactly the situation that works better without implicit MX.
