Given the amount of sage commentary has been posted, is there a document that should be produced?

Measuring actual costs (what is the resource cost of session setup and teardown, and of maintaining an open session, for well-implemented, mainstream MTAs?) would seem to be something to do before discussing such a document in much detail.

That's certainly a concrete and potentially useful operational optimization study that could be performed.

Hmmm. I wonder how much of such a study would be applicable to other apps, such as http?

Yes. Anything related to flow rates (IN=OUT) and the derivatives of the rates applies. Bank waiting lines with limited tellers to Fluidized Catalytic Crackers (barrels of oil processing into various components from gases (lightest), oils, gasoline to tar (heaviest)). All use the same basic principles to maximize performance and avoid overflowing chaotic conditions.

Are any hands-on researchers watching this list? If anyone knows such folk, it might be worth whispering in their ear.

Google is your friend.
