Hmmm ... seems like the telephone system has a similar system. You dial 411
and ask for "Malamud(_at_)StewartsPoint" and a human/humanoid answers "Please

There's certainly room for systems like RealNames and certainly rooms for
other namespaces that handle ambiguity, but the DNS serves a pretty useful
purpose
of resolving domain names to various resource records. Rather than
muck with it, I like Peter's approach of trying to build new services and
keeping the existing one in place.

Please note that the "harris" solutions were presented as meta-systems.
My comments implied no changes whatosever to the DNS. Actually,
my comments denied any changes in the DNS in order to be applied.

If it was otherwise intepreted by anyone, may this msg eliminate the
ambiguity ;-)

BTW, they can also be automated as I commented before.

ed,

sorry I asked an ambiguous question!

your answer worked for the case that harris.com was unambiguous.

As below, the answer works when an email address returns ambiguous results
-- whatever the cause of that ambiguity.

I was trying to ask what if the "harris.com" part of
"user(_at_)harris(_dot_)com" produced ambiguous results?

In the same way, where both my short and long answers apply. Please note
that you just moved the same problem to a higher node. To exemplify, the
short
answer could be something like:
