The argument of costliness just doesn't hold water.

Maybe for *you* it doesn't hold water, but that doesn't mean that your
experience matches everybody else's.  I'll note that you're not the one who's
trying to get roaming Internet access in Wales like Ted is, or having to find
ways to provision an OC-12 in the more remote parts of Appalachia (we bit the
bullet and started our own long-haul network provider), or having to deal with
what passes for a telco in most of Africa, as some readers almost certainly
are.  You're not having to catch and drop a *billion* spams a day like the
guys at AOL or MSN/Hotmail (my hats off to them - that's quite an engineering
feat).
