The history of UK vs. GB is explained in RFC 3071 - for unrelated
reasons I read it yesterday again.

RFC 3071's comments about the crown dependencies are now obsolete,
since they have been added to ISO 3166. The ISO 3166 FAQ also has
more information about UK vs. GB than RFC 3071:
http://www.iso.org/iso/country_codes/iso_3166-faqs/iso_3166_faqs_specific.htm

See also the international conventions on road traffic, under which the
international licence plate country codes are maintained by the UN. GB has
been the designation for the United Kingdom for a long time, from before
the existance of ISO 3166 let alone the DNS.
