These "registration IDs" are hard to remember. That's why I joined so
many sessions "without rugistration ID".

When you need to registration ID to participate you will
record it,

Post-it note on the screen, no doubt...

look it in the registration email

Often there are 100 spams I haven't finished dealing with...

or recover it.

   How?

IETF 97 confirmation for Mr. Mark P Andrews
      Registration Type: Remote Participant
      Your registration number is 97XXXXXXXX

I suppose that's "easy enough" assuming I've found the email (on the
same computer I'm using for remote attendance) and can cut&paste. I must
be getting too old to participate in IETF weeks if I ever fail...

The same email-based facility that is currently available to retrieve
a forgotten registration ID would continue to be available.

Believe it or not, I haven't used that recently...

This is not practical unless you allow joining enough before the start
of session to complete the process.

The session are open well before the workig group actually starts.

I've found that time to be variable: sometimes less than two minutes...

The cookie-based ???Remember me??? option would also still be available.

Would you believe some of us avoid cookies?

(Of course, I never avoid the physical cookies when I'm physically
present!)

Other options for authentication (leveraging a user-chosen password or
datatracker credentials) might be explored further in the future.

I strongly advise considering them before disallowing registration
without registration ID.

BTW, it's not unusual (for me, anyway) to join different sessions from
different computers, not all of which will have all the cookies.

If you really want to make it harder to join an individual session
(or re-join after a MeetEcho glitch, for that matter), I probably
can't stop you; but I won't consider it a reasonable trade-off for
collecting some information you've already collected that same day.

Perhaps you'll find volunteers to man the help-lines for folks having
trouble joining sessions...
