RE: spamrc.txt file not working

2002-02-11 18:02:50
On 11 Feb, Tom Warfield asked in repsonse to me pointing out a set of
recipes he was trying to use was flawed:

| Do you have any suggestions on something else that would work better
| with procmail?
|
| Basically im just trying to stop my end users from getting spammed, so
| with that in mind any recommendations?
|

It's a rather open ended question for which there is almost certainly no
pat answer. None of what follows is intended as a swipe at you so, if it
sounds that way, please know it's unintended.

There are a lot of criteria that could affect your choice(s). Off the
top of my head and in no particular order:

1) How mission critical is the mail server ?
   a) Do other people depend on you "getting it right" ?
   b) How much room is there for error ?

2) How comfortable are you with procmail ?
   a) Can you roll your own filters ?
   b) Can you understand/modify others' ?
   c) How comfortable are you with regular expressions ?

3) How much time do you have to devote ?
   a) Do you have the skills/inclination to deal with any of this?
   b) Or do you need more of a turn-key solution ?

I can only speak to my circumstances, and you have to know your own. As
much as I agree with Sean Straw (in a previous thread) about incessant
and non-productive shills for certain canned solutions, that's arguably
the way to go for some people. If you picked up spamrc.txt and were
putting it in "production", without knowing it was flawed, then maybe
you fall into that camp. OTOH, if your circumstances allow it, you may
decide you need the power that comes with controlling your own solution
(and seeing what your software can do _for_ you rather than _to_ you.)

If canned solutions are what you need, someone else will have to help
because I have no first hand experience. If learning procmail is on
your mind, then you'll want to get familiar with the man pages and
other basic documentation which can be found at procmail.org, and the
searchable list archives at

My experience on this list (some 6 years) is that you'll find an
abundance of _quality_ help as long as you demonstrate willingness to
help yourself. The "takers", who somehow think they were born into this
world with some entitlement to have everything done for them on demand,
are probably most often disappointed here. Procmail is a wonderful tool
for those inclined to learn to wield it, and accessible even without
knowing all its features. You can accomplish a lot with simple recipes,
or make it as compicated as you care to, but there are no pretty icons
to hide the detail from you. It'll take some effort, and how much
depends on what you want (and are willing) to do, and how much
imagination you have.

Reply to list please, or append "6" to "procmail" in address if you must.
Spammers' unrelenting address harvesting forces me to this...reluctantly.
