No, you could not use just any number. The number says that the next N
lines, asterisked or not, are conditions and that the action line
follows them.
Actually, to be precise, it seems to identify the next N conditions,
rather than to treat the next N lines as conditions.
(By experiment using a recipe containing:
:2
a\
.*a
b
c
which files into file "c" and not "b".)
