Why do you use maildir for this which crates unneccesary
subdirectories?
The new, cur and tmp are all necessary, but they are implementation
details that are transparent: in normal circumstances you don't need to
know (or deal with) that they are there.
After studying this a bit, I have gone with the maildir format. Ruud's
points really seem important, even though it will be another program
(asterfax.jar running as a service) that will be pulling them out of the
inbox/new
