If you completely translate the subdomain to use dashes, you get
"-smtp-client". I believe that has a very low risk of collision.
However, it is also no better than _smtp_client in that both violate
hostname rules (if you think they're relevent in this context).
And underscore at least has the benefit of consistency with SRV
records.
