Was it not determined that to comply with the hostname rules, the
hostname had to contain only letters, numbers, and/or dashes?
Hostname rules also require that the label must not begin or end with
a hyphen. See RFC1123 section 2.1 (which in turn references the _old_
hostname rules of RFC952).
