Hostname rules also require that the label must not begin or end with
a hyphen. See RFC1123 section 2.1 (which in turn references the _old_
hostname rules of RFC952).
Then how about a subdomain like "spf-conf"? Even without the leading
hyphen or underscore that should have relatively low collision risk.
