Besides, most sites of any size understand that Groupwise and Excahnge 
should not be connected directly to the Internet, but rather, should have 
a more flexible and secure MTA in front of them.

Most likely with Groupwise there is no other way. Try going through
their 
support and asking point blank what you need to be able to accept SMTP
connections on SUBMIT (or any other different port) in addition to port
25.
