You missed one of the most important ones. To ensure that the email
address given to the list actually did ask to subscribe. It's an
authentication mechanism, and one I am thankful for everytime some
virus tries to subscribe me to a mailing list.

I'm not sure which upsets me more: that people are so unwilling to accept
