I got burned by Jackpot.com a little over a year ago. Someone signed up on their web site using my email address. Within a matter of minutes Jackpot had given my email address to a dozen affiliates who promptly started a barrage of email advertisements. The process was *not* reversible. Jackpot had no way to say, "Oops, we take that address back." I had to fight it out which each individual affiliate. My only payment for this pain? One of the affiliates lost their ISP account as a result.

I'm not sure which upsets me more: that people are so unwilling to accept
responsibility for their own actions, or that they are so eager to regulate
everyone else's.
