The biggest problem seem to be dealing with mailing lists.

Why are people mixing their C/R system with mailing lists then?
Since there isn't a standard for identifying a mailing list message,
all one can use is heuristics, which are not completely reliable.

Since the C/R system doesn't filter based on content, it can't help
you with spam on the list anyway. Once the spam gets distributed to
the list, it's now just another list message as far as the C/R system
is concerned.

Instead, either use Gmane (http://gmane.org/), or filter your list
traffic before it hits the C/R system.

As an aside, I think that as mail environments get increasingly more
complex to deal with previously undreamt of issues like spam, the need
to decouple "services" such as mailing lists from your mailbox will
become more and more necessary. The practice of forcing your mailbox
into every possible shape and size will be a historical artifact.
