I think there are quite a few reasons. Mine are:
1) Ability to render in alternate ways to improve
readability and accessibility
2) Ability to cross reference documents
3) More uniformity in, e.g. references

You didn't say what the additional value would be. We know the
additional value of a .ps file (drawings that don't translate to
ASCII art). What is the value of XML? It certainly isn't
searchability or readability.
