Shouldn't the question of _which_ equipment to buy come first ? That will
  pretty much
  determine the price.

indeed. my question about cost was meant as the 'bottom line' information needed.

and before equipment choices comes the question of what services we need from all this.

for example, one posting said we require the latest, spiffiest features. i think that is not correct. we need highly reliable service possible, given the usage patterns. newness and spiffiness are, i suspect, negatives.

that would have been my post.... i think the point was mangled...
in the past, the IETF mtgs were targeted to discussion - network
access was nice and occasionally highly operationally oriented
(remembering when we switched from BGP3 to BGP-4 en-mass
        in the terminal room.... )
BUT ... one in four mtgs each year were for live testing, the Interop
event. With the demise of Interop as a viable place for testing/debugging,
much of this has reverted to the IETF network(s)....

I'm of the opinion that if we need "highly reliable service" that such is
available from a number of suppliers on a pay for use basis.

I'd argue that having an IETF traveling circus is a not where i'd want to
spend my money .... unless the network was ammenable to kicking
the tyres on new stuff. We -NEED- to eat our own dogfood. Loaner kit, eager volunteers, latest & greatest code.... all good stuff.... esp if we
can make it work. if not, then we have the chance to learn.
