Re: IAOC requesting input on (potential) meeting cities

On my last day of the IETF I visited the Museum of Science and Industry after
the IETF sessions were done and before my flight from Chicago Midway airport.
The journey from the museum to Chicago Midway went through the area described,
which was evidenced by about 2 or 3km where every single home and business had
all windows covered in plywood. Uncomfortable, but fortunately not fatal.

Most of all the homicides in Chicago take place in a few square miles in
certain areas a little outside the downtown district which is itself relatively
safe. As Christer says most of those incidents are related to narcotics and the
associated gang turf wars.

Chicago is a big city, and the murder rate varies widely between different
areas. So, if you do your maths based on the numbers in the areas where IETFers
are likely to move around, and the kind of activities IETFers are likely to
participate in (much of the violence is related to gang/drug-related
activities), I¹m sure the result is going to be even smallerŠ

Right, the 270 micromorts per year (~ 5 micromorts per week) you cited
would lead to a ~ 0.5 % chance of anyone of the ~ 1000 IETFers getting
killed ‹ a factor three less than the 1.5 % that my numbers result in,
but not off by a large factor.
(Still, I wonder where that factor three comes from.)

Luckily, we hit the other 98.5 % this week.

(I¹m not that worried by the ~ 15 micromorts of risk I personally was
subjected to, given that I spent on the order of 250 microlives for the
time that went into this meeting.
But my wife, who had been planning our wonderful vacation in Colombia
earlier this year, definitely was.)
