Interesting question.
Allowing numerals and upper and lower case letters. but not special characters,
there are 3,844 possible 2 character commands. Allowing only lower case letters
there 676 possible commands. There are 66 two letter commands in my $PATH.
Excluding commands in ~/bin and /usr/local/bin there are 49 two letter
commands. There are no 2 letter commands in /usr/local/nmh/bin/ .
All of this excludes shell built in commands, (there are several two character
built in commands in bash 4.1.2(1)) functions and aliases.
I'm running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.2 with a developer installation option
and and a lot of optional stuff.
Nonetheless, I, with you, am surprised that there isn't a lot more collision.
