AFAIK, the From: field is generated by sendmail. If you can use
sendmail's -f option you should be able to change the From: field.
No. The From: header field the 'header sender'. Sendmail's -f flag
sets the 'envelope sender'. This the address which should receive
bounce messages regarding the message. SMTP transports the envelope
sender via the "MAIL From:" command, and it _usually_ ends up in the
Return-Path: header field when the message is delivered at the far end.
If the message is stored in mbox format then the "From " message
separator will generally also contain the envelope sender.
Do not confuse the "From " address and the "From:" address: the person
in the From: header field was the 'composer' of the message, while the
address in the "From " line (or Return-Path: header) is concerned with
delivery problems.
