All of the replies to my original email have been typical. I AM NOT
CHALLENGING THE WORTH OF SPF. If you read my original message, I said that
I am absolutely FOR SPF.
Ah, ok.
I am/was trying to say this and only this:
1) SPF checking should NOT be done at SMTP time. It is less intrusive to
the entire installed base of email
(How?)
infrastructure to process an email AFTER
it as been accepted. In this way, it can be processed along with other
spam-related checks. And,
This is only if you plan on accepting mail that would not pass an SPF check. If
you
are going to reject mail that does not pass an SPF check, why continue to get
the
body. If you are not going to reject it, then the SPF point is moot.
2) The major argument for processing SPF at SMTP time has been bandwith and
processing savings, which I believe are MINIMAL for non-ISP's.
It really does not matter to me if it saves or not. If it is not valid, I want
to dump it as
soon as possible. I don't want it on my system, I don't want to have to process
it.
From my perspective, it is my mailserver, and I can accept/reject/etc as I
choose. My
customers can either accept the way I do things, or they can find someone else
to
purchase services with.
Well, that's my take on it.
