Is it correct for ISPs to ban their users from using an authenticated
SMPT server outside of their network?
Absolutely, YES!
Now, you as a customer have the option of using that provider or not. If you
are on a
dynamic (or semi-dynamic as it turns out for some people), stop complaining. If
you
want to run a mailserver, contact your ISP, purchase a static IP address, get
the
reverse mapped correctly, and go for it. In this scenario, you should have
unfettered
ports.
If your ISP in no way will tolerate this, then purchase a colo box somewhere,
use a
different port, or tunnel with a VPN, etc, etc.
The TOS for your provider are the bottom line. Don't like them? Buy your own T1
line
(or whatever you need), and get busy.
This argument as a whole (over the last month that I have been subscribed) has
gotten ridiculous. There is more than one way to skin a cat, and the spam
problem
isn't going to go away with content filters.
Thanks for you time listening. :)
