Re: Perfect Spam Blocking with SPF -- Update

2004-08-20 11:28:01
Wow! I see I touched a nerve with my dis about Godaddy.

I don't have any thing against them per-se. Perhaps I won't
block Godaddy. However, I *definitely* will block their
subsidiary DomainsByProxy.COM. Every spam I've gotten that
escaped the SPF filter has come from a domain at this
registrar.

I complained about one and received no reply. I also found a
lot of evidence that they are miscreants by Googling on them.
Godaddy gets a bad rep with me because they own DomainsByProxy.

And actually, I really don't know hardly anyone who would use
Godaddy. My friends are all at large ESPs like AOL or Earthlink
(who do a good job stopping spammers). Very few are anywhere
near as geeky as I am thus would be likely to setup a vanity
domain. My business contacts are all at corporations that
generally register with their big network provider like Savvis
or Cogent. Smaller business (like me) register with their
web service provider such as Tierra Net (my registrar).

And BTW, no, I don't talk to strangers on the subway.
Neither does anyone else in NYC.

As I've said in this group many times. That ancient device
called a telephone is the way to go if e-mail doesn't work. If
it's truly important, its worth a telephone call. It's much more
personal and doesn't cost much aside from the willingness to
spend a little time talking to someone. This is a rare thing
any more.

Doing automated whois checks will likely result in your IP being
blocked by the registrars' whois servers - whois proxy services like
geektools have had problems with this happening.

This won't happen as I'll cache the 'whois' results. I get
under a 1000 e-mails a week, including the 800 spams that will
get bounced before the 'whois' check. SpamCop has cached large
volumes of 'whois' information for years with good results.
