Re: re: djbdns is not free

This is not intended as a warning or anything, just clarifying my
understanding of what the "topic" is and what constitutes "off-topic". (As I
mentioned, off-topic is OK to some extent but I want to encourage people to
moderate themselves so I don't have to :)

Ok lets try this,

This discussion is soooooo far off topic that I hope this msg can serve
to end it. Flat out nobody here cares about it one way or another
unless, somehow we've mystically changed topic!

You do not represent everyone on this list. Clearly _I_ am interested
in it. Also Greg has expressed interest. Furthermore, so has Bashar Al
Abdulhadi as well Jeroen Massar.

Its absolutely NOT off topic.

Yes, it is. The topic of the list is "SPF". I believe the subject line said
[OT] before so I think the original author knew it was.

I agree with Chuck, please take discussions about "djbdns vs bind" or "djbdns
license" to another forum or to private email.

I'm not stating that we need to sit here and bicker back and forth, but
I saw misinformation and responded in a non-antagonistic manner
attempting to ensure that were someone to follow the thread they would
happen upon information to counter the previously posted.

As I stated at the end of my last post on this topic to Jeroen, I
cordially invited offlist discussion if he wished to debate my logic
further.

Thanks, it is appreciated. Posting a redirection telling people where to go
for more discussion is fine.

I think its better that you should simple exercise your right to ignore
the topic all together. It was even politely given an [OT] tag to aide
in those ignoring it. It may not be right on topic topic, but its most
certainly relevant.

It's a fine line between "appropriate off-topic" and "inappropriate off-topic"
and it's also quite subjective. I think it's probably best to handle it on a
per-topic basis. There are also other factors, such as how many people seem
to be interested, and how much other traffic there is on the list. We
certainly don't want to get into a situation where there are more messages not
about SPF than actually are about SPF.

I'm going to trust everyone to use their own judgement rather than trying to
make rules and enforce them. Please just be aware if you're writing a post
that doesn't mention SPF at all, that the list admins may ask for the thread
to be stopped. Above that, use your own judgement. Posting once on an
off-topic thread and leaving it alone is probably a good guideline. Making
sure you have posted something on-topic first, then posting off-topic is
another good guideline.

Thanks again

Everyone says that having power is a great responsibility. This is a lot
of bunk. Responsibility is when someone can blame you if something goes
wrong. When you have power you are surrounded by people whose job it is
to take the blame for your mistakes. If they're smart, that is.
