I believe your example concerns such an IP address.

No, it was the IP address of a 'user' from the ISP's point of view. Something was logging into the ISP's mail server using a username/password. It was that 'something' whose IP address we needed to see to be able to tell whether it was coming from the authentic user's network, or somewhere else.

As far as I can tell, it's exactly that IP address which it is being suggested to obfuscate.
