Re: Catching this list's mail

At 1:45 PM -0500 2/5/02, Dave Robbins is rumored to have typed:

My current procmail mailbox goes back some 4,500 messages
to March 2001. Obviously, the X-Been-There ain't been there
a whole lot.

   (*sigh*) Have you considered actually _looking_ at the complete header
fields of a Procmail Mailing List message? From YOURS:

<snip>
X-BeenThere: procmail(_at_)lists(_dot_)RWTH-Aachen(_dot_)DE
X-Mailman-Version: 2.0.5
List-Help:
<mailto:procmail-request(_at_)lists(_dot_)RWTH-Aachen(_dot_)DE?subject=help>
List-Post: <mailto:procmail(_at_)lists(_dot_)RWTH-Aachen(_dot_)DE>
List-Subscribe: <http://MailMan.RWTH-Aachen.DE/mailman/listinfo/procmail>,

<mailto:procmail-request(_at_)lists(_dot_)RWTH-Aachen(_dot_)DE?subject=subscribe>
List-Id: discussion of the procmail program <procmail.lists.RWTH-Aachen.DE>
List-Unsubscribe: <http://MailMan.RWTH-Aachen.DE/mailman/listinfo/procmail>,

<mailto:procmail-request(_at_)lists(_dot_)RWTH-Aachen(_dot_)DE?subject=unsubscribe>
List-Archive: <http://MailMan.RWTH-Aachen.DE/pipermail/procmail/>
Date: Tue, 5 Feb 2002 10:45:33 -0800 (PST)
<snip>

   Obviously, since I was typing "out loud," I typoed and got an extra "-" in
the field name (quick show of hands of those who have never made a
typo...none?...I thought not). But good grief, one would expect a _little_
bit of research for verification from the recipient, particularly when it
would have taken literally MOMENTS to view complete header fields of any
message. It isn't like this field has been hiding or anything - EVERY
MailMan-based mailing list carries one (and I don't know of any other mailing
list manager that uses that goofily-named field).

   Besides, I don't care _what_ recipe you use...my only point is that ANY
recipe designed to filter mail should use as unique a field as possible to
avoid false positives (specifically targeted at Mr. Dunford's "^TO_procmail"
recipe). You could equally use the List-ID: header field (although
lists.RWTH-Aachen.DE isn't using that field according to the RFCs, since as I
understand it that field should not change if the list moves servers), or
even the List-Archive: header field. But it requires looking past the couple
of practically-useless fields most modern clients display by default to find
the unique fields.

         Charlie
