Why ugly and fragile?  grep, fgrep and egrep use the technique to good
avail, along with several other well-known utilities.

If the formail functionality is added
to procmail, it should have its own syntax, rather than look like an
external program invocation.

I wasn't suggesting that the "formail extensions" added to procmail
would rely on the `formail ...` construct.  Simply pointing out that
if formail has procmail builtin than procmail may as well have
formail builtin.  As in shell, a reference to a pathname with
embedded '/'s disables the optimization and invokes the full
program.  By offering the ability for procmail to invoke formail
as a builtin, old scripts also run a bit faster.
