Debian package maintainers aren't known for being adventurous, or for
that matter particularly responsive.
I think the official way to go about that would be to file a wishlist
bug through the Debian bug tracking system (http://bugs.debian.org/).
Attaching a patch to the bug would probably increase the likelihood of
seeing action on it.
