Yes, a lot of mail clients would need to be fixed. Do clients
correctly implement things like SMTP-AUTH or STARTTLS nowadays? How
many are still
relying on SMTP after POP?
Evolution can do SMTP-AUTH or POP before SMTP, and on any ports you care
to specify. MS Outlook also supports SMTP-AUTH and will let you define
ports. I used to use TheBat! Also, and if I recall correctly, it
allowed you to specify arbitrary ports as well. I think there are
probably fewer clients that would need to be fixed than you may think.
