Re: SPF will solve spam and punish spammers

You are all missing the point. Let me put it a different way. There was a
time when you did not need a drivers license or insurance to drive a car.
That time has now passed. There was once a time when you did not need
certification to run a mail server that time will pass.

As to spammers buying throw away domains maybe a solution is 2 fold. First
year registration $500 or 1,000 or more renewal only 10 or 20 dollars.
Blacklist by domain would be needed. Within a day or so the domain would be
blacklisted. Renewal would be denied unless proof is provided the server was
hijacked. Make the threshold very high.

Additionally overly large ip range ( not sure what it is) for spf records
would result in the same point score as no spf record.

Now you have made it very unprofitable to buy throw away domains and
unprofitable to buy similar misspelled domains to steal your traffic.

Add to that certification to run a mail server through sender id
registration and certification you further reduce the ability to register a
mail server domain for spamming or spoofing.

A spammer register a domain as a throw away domain. They get a person to
register for a sender ID. Now they use it for spam and the domain and the
sender id and person are blacklisted and the person is refused a sender ID
for say 5 years.

Now you have driven up the cost, quickly deplete the users who can get a
sender Id for spamming. Result, a simple process of registering a throw away
domain for spam is now a complicated expensive time consuming process that
severely hampers spammers.

Spam registers quickly go away. Spam is no longer profitable or simple.

<FLAME>
You do not do run any kind of biz operation then... you have to buy every
misspelling of your domain, if you don't want some turd to start stealing

traffic. you have to have every domain name that people might think of
rather than what you had in mind when you got started. Oh gee, now you
have
over 100 domains, and you register them for 10 years so you don't let
someone
steal the domain from you, hmmmm. Yah, I spend more than $5000 a year on
keeping my mail-server secure, and yes, you might drive some of the
Spammers
away, but a half million dollars is chump change to the top 100
Spammers...
When you see articles on Spammers building million dollar houses... and
complaining when someone publishes a picture of it and the address that
they
are being stalked...

My reason for this is it takes more than $500 a year to keep up with the
technology of running as GOOD SECURE mail server.

Le vendredi 23 Juillet 2004 19:50, John Keown a ?crit :

I would not care if it cost $500 a year to register a domain if that
would
make it unprofitable for spammers to buy throw away domains.

Many private individuals and non-profit organizations would care much.
How
stupid.

Of course, hotmail.com wouldn't care much if the registration of its
domain
would cost $5000 a year.

Who is the Internet for ? Only for the big companies with big money,
or
for
you and I and everybody ?
