A Micro$oft Shop, Eh?

Impossible. They don't have any "GOOD SECURE mail server" at "A
Micro$oft
Shop".

Actually, for a big corporation, the $500 figure is not unreasonable.
That represents about 5 hours time + taxes/benefits of a typical tech
employee.
This is an important budget component, and the original poster is correct
that if you have to pay salalary + benefits for someone to maintain
mail servers, another $500/yr is negligible.

However, those of us who have our own business, or work for a small
business, or have a hobby, are just as competent, or likely more
competent, than the corporate technician. But there is no dollar
figure attached. The self-employed and the small-business employed
worker wears many, many hats, but gets only one salary which he would
rather not hand over to someone else. The hobbyist does it for fun.

We do out source email for as little as 19.95 per month. That includes
webmail, virus scanning, spam rating ( you decide to delete by a rule or
store yourself)
and web access to add and delete users, alias and forwards and etc.

You can customize your web mail interface if you desire.

For comparison, getting a Verisign certificate costs $900/yr. Big corps
all have one, but us little guys have to settle for setting up our
own certificate authority (which customers are generally willing to trust
after a face to face meeting).

Is that for a secure certificate then someone is ripping you off.

I am sure when you are done it cost you more than $240 a year to run your
own email server.
