My mistake, I should have said client as it is the client which sends
EHLO to the server. There is no need for the client's IP address to
have a PTR record. All that is required is that either the client has
an A record, in which case it sends its FQDN as the parameter to EHLO,
or it does not, in which case it sends its IP address literal in the
EHLO. In particular there is no requirement for the FQDN in the EHLO
sent by the client to match any PTR records for the IP address which
connects to the server.
