Such a parameter is invalid per RFC 1123, and can be rejected.
RFC 1123 section 5.2.5:
" Note also that the HELO argument is still required to have
valid <domain> syntax, since it will appear in a Received:
line; otherwise, a 501 error is to be sent.

"xyzzy" is _not_ a valid domain syntax -> 501 error
